Course Description:

This course is designed to take already existing firearms instructors and train them to instruct a patrol rifle course which is designed to not only qualify an individual patrol officer on the weapons systems, but also to instruct many aspects of the use of the rifle which are traditionally neglected by instructors doing ‘simple’ qualification.

Most patrol rifle qualification courses are concerned only with accuracy with the weapon and do not take the time to instruct officers on how to fight with the rifle which can lead to tragic consequences as accuracy degrades when officers are struggling just to ‘work’ the weapons system.  Topics such as emergency reloading and magazine carriage are often left to the student officer to ‘figure out’ which places them well behind the thought curve when such skills become necessary. The instructor level course is purposely built in such a manner as to bring the intrinsic skill sets necessary to effectively operate the weapon in a threat environment into the qualification standards of the agency, effectively making them second nature to the officer allowing them to concentrate on the tactical solution to the overall problem which they are facing.

Throughout the course, many crucial topics will be introduced. ‘Teach back time’ is included in each block of instruction requiring instructor candidates to not only replicate the technique but also explain the methodology to teach to a group of patrol officers the required  skill sets in an effective, easy to learn and most importantly retainable manner.

Course is heavily weighed to mimic actual patrol based shootings involving a patrol rifle, including deployment, manipulation and the associated challenges which patrol officers face in regard to the use a rifle, not a SWAT officer, there is a huge difference both in considerations for use but also normally in the actual equipment itself. Example, SWAT officers have magazine pouches for their rifle and pistol magazines on their vests, not so for patrol so how do they reload the rifle, from where, how, when? How do they don that (reloading) equipment? Are there, or should there be, Department standards for this and should reloads be factored into the Department rifle qualification? (Yes,yes and yes) SWAT officers typically field very short barrel rifles, patrol has longer weapons, but is very rarely, if ever, taught how to use them in close quarters.
