The vast majority of motor vehicle crashes, particularly single vehicle crashes, involve the striking of fixed objects and in so many cases, no skid marks or other evidence is left behind.  These fixed objects are usually utility poles or trees.  This 2-day course focuses on reconstructing frontal impacts of automobiles, SUVs and pick-up trucks.

This course is designed for crash investigators who wish to understand and utilize the latest information available in interpreting whatever physical evidence is left at a crash scene.  Recognizing, protecting and collecting forensic evidence is stressed and applied in formulas designed for calculating speed.

Obtaining given information from utility poles is critical in the reconstruction of these types of crashes.  You will be taught how to decipher the letters and numbers that are affixed to each pole, such as what type of wood it is, how long it has been in the ground, how it has been treated and preserved what precisely are you dealing with in regard to the equipment that is above your head.  The course moves on to examining the vehicle, photographing the scene, and reviewing required measurements that must be taken.  An extensive hands on experience closes out this course by working through numerous applicable crash scenarios and using pole strike related formulas to determine a reasonable speed at time of impact.

Each attendee will receive a course manual authored by the instructor that will cover crash scenarios, step-by-step images as to how to work their way through each formula as well as being provided with the actual answers for application to actual crashes they may investigate in the future.

Course Content:

Information About and From Utility Poles
Vehicle Collision Dynamics
Measuring Vehicle Crush
Measuring Various Damage Patterns
Collision Speed Estimates
ForcForce, Work, and Energy in Moving Pole
Break Fracture Energy
Method Performance and Statistical Analysis
Lateral Pole Impacts
Estimating Post-impact Translational and Rotational Energy
Full Scale Crash Testing

Entry Level Standards:

This course is open to any individual that has completed SRR's Crash Reconstruction Course or it's equivalence.  Individuals with a strong mathematical background and have completed SRR's Advanced Crash Investigation or it's equivalence, may attend, but may be challenged with pole strike formulas.
